Visualisation Technique Brings A New Carpet

The post today intertwines visualisation and coincidence or synchronicity. The story is, with thanks, from Amanda and is about her personal experience. It shows how visualisation can bring about coincidences which can help us get what we want.

I was widowed about ten years ago and though not likely to starve I'm not exactly flush with an abundance of money.

I had managed to decorate my flat (apartment) and thought it looked very nice. What I needed as a finishing touch was a cream carpet. Not any cream carpet but one that had a luxurious thick pile. Unfortunately this was way over anything I could afford.

Every night I tried a visualisation technique I had read about. I closed my eyes and imagined my flat was covered with a beautiful thick, cream coloured carpet. I didn't want the money to pay for it, as I knew I would most likely use this for something else. I simply wanted the carpet.

One day I was at work and my boss and I were talking about invoices and the conversation somehow switched to how he was getting married for a second time and that he would be moving to a larger house in the suburbs.

Almost in passing he said that the house he was moving to had a cream carpet covering the whole ground floor which the previous owners had only recently laid. He continued by saying that it would have to go as between them, him and his new wife to be had four small children. They needed something more practical.

When I mentioned to him that I would love to have such a carpet he said I could have it for free as long as I could get someone to remove it.

I accepted at once and with the help of my brother and his van we removed the carpet from my boss's house and then re-laid it in my flat. It was perfect, exactly what I wanted, my visualisation had succeeded.

I've now made a list of other things I want. Hope this isn't being greedy!"

Five New Brooms Arrived By Coincidence

Four new brooms
Coincidences like this make me smile.

My wife said that she thought we needed a new broom for sweeping our outside paths. Me, being me, said, "What's wrong with the two that we have?" They seemed okay, I'd only used them a couple of days previously.

Anyway, to keep it short, I was wrong! We needed a new broom. "I'll conjure one up." I laughed.

Two days later we set off for a walk from home. We have several routes that give us a three to four mile journey. We decided on which one we would do and set off, with not a mention or a thought of a broom.

We walked about a quarter of a mile and passed a house, where the owner was clearing out unwanted bits and pieces. Most of this he had thrown in a rubbish skip but there against the wall, with a sign which read: 'Please take away for free', were five brand new brooms!

We stopped and the man saw us looking. "Is it okay if we take one," I asked.

"I'd rather you took all of them," he answered and told us how he was clearing out his garage and sheds of everything he no longer needed.

new broomSo, suddenly we were the 'proud' owners of five brand new brooms (labels still on them - they had to be assembled) - just as my wife wanted. I know there are only four in the photo but we have already given one away to our son.

When things like this happen it always amuses me. My wife wanted a broom and got five! As it says in St.Luke: "... and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over ..."

I'm not into any organised religion but there are 'truths' within the Bible alongside many that aren't, of course.

I think I've probably written something similar previously, but it seems that when we want something in a light hearted way, not really bothering if it comes about or not - it very often appears.

This seems to be one of the secrets of visualisation: Picture what it is we want, release the matrix and then forget about it. A little while later, perhaps depending on how clear the picture created, the object arrives.

As St.Paul is quoted as saying, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked; for whatever a man soweth that shall he reap." But personally I reckon the universe has a sense of humour, we just have to be careful what we ask for.

Coincidence Of A Fly Who Made An Impression

a flyHere's a strange, amusing coincidence story from a 67 Not Out reader, who wishes to remain anonymous. Not sure if there is any great meaning to it, but sometimes we do seem to get help from unusual sources to enable us to make a point.

I don't know what you will make of this but I swear that it's true. I presume it comes under the category of a coincidence because I don't know how it could have happened otherwise.

I once worked for a boss who was very aggressive and domineering, and who criticized me for being much too easy going. She often preached that I needed to change my attitude to succeed with her company. One day she was rambling on and on about how I should have more fight in me, how I should change my attitude, become more out going and aggressive.

We were standing by a window as she continued with her rant.

It's true I am placid and usually easy going but I'd had enough of her lecture and wasn't going to change my nature for her, or anyone else for that matter.

I spotted a fly settling on the window and I pointed my finger to it and said, "I'm afraid that's the way I am. I wouldn't even hurt a fly."

As I said this, the fly left the window and landed on my finger. It stayed there and I brought it towards her so she could take a good look. It was absolutely magical, an unbelievable moment and it looked exactly as if I had intended this to happen.

Her expression was one of amazement and she clasped her hands to her sizable chest. The clear picture of her shocked face remains with me to this day, even though this happened about ten years ago.

As she looked at me I said to the fly, "Off you go," and wiggled my finger so that it flew off to the window once more. "Was there anything else?" I asked my boss.

"No, that's it for now," she mumbled.

I left the company a short while after this for somewhere more appreciative to my easy going nature.

A Money Problem Solved By A Coincidence

A coincidence of how looking for a phone number sorted out a financial problem. The writer wishes to remain anonymous but is from the USA.

"Last month I was really stressing about money. I hadn't received my Child Support check and I couldn't get any answers as to what had happened to the money from the enforcement bureau.telephone cartoon clip artI work the night shift and one day when I woke up, after getting some sleep in the morning, my daughter told me that the phone wasn't working. I picked up the phone and sure enough there was no dial tone.

I got out the phone book and tried to find the number for telephone repair as I figured I would just call them to report the fault on my cell phone.

I couldn't find the right number in the phone book so I called information on my cell phone but they gave me the wrong number. That’s when I went into my bedroom and started digging through a box of paperwork, receipts, old bills, and so on to locate a previous phone bill - as this would show the number to call for a fault.

As I was digging through this mountain of paperwork, I saw an envelope from Child Support that had the edge torn off. I picked it up and it felt like there was something in it. I tore the envelope completely open and there was a check that had been sent to me the previous February.

Wow, I hit the jackpot. How could I have missed that check. I must have gathered it up with a bunch of old mail one day and put it in the box. I looked at the date and luckily for me there was still another month to go before the check was no longer valid.

I was amazed and shaking over my good fortune. I stuck the check on my dresser and continued to dig through the paperwork to try and find an old phone bill with the phone number I wanted.

As I was doing this the phone rang. I picked it up. No one was there but there was a dial tone and my phone was back in service. Two problems solved."

Afghanistan War Coincidence With The 1800s

I don't really want to get into the world of politics with this blog but I came across something today which is one of those coincidences where history repeats itself - or at least it could.

I'll say first that I was against the invasion of Iraq and I'm none too happy either with the situation in Afghanistan today. And it's Afghanistan that this post is about.

Being British I can only talk about 'our' involvement and the horror of seeing mostly young soldiers being killed almost daily.

We British have, however, seen all of this previously back in the mid 1800s. This was at the time of the first Anglo-Afghan War. It was a bloody, savage war and an Army Chaplain, the Rev GR Greig, wrote in his memoirs of the humiliation felt when Britain finally pulled out. This is what he said:

"A war begun for no wise purpose, carried on with a strange mixture of rashness and timidity, brought to a close after suffering and disaster, without much glory attached either to the government, which directed, or the great body of troops, which wagered it.

Not one benefit, political or military, has Britain acquired with this war. Our eventual evacuation of the country resembled the retreat of an army defeated."


Much of what the Reverend wrote in 1843 could be applicable today. Most of us aren't too sure of the purpose of troops being in Afghanistan, despite what the politicians tell us. And it does seem to be a possibility that there will eventually have to be a withdrawal, without much being achieved. The Taliban will once more gain control.

So have we learned anything from history? Probably not.

One recent article I read via the BBC News website does make me wonder about Afghanistan. What is this report about? Afghanistan may have more than a trillion dollars worth of untapped mineral deposits, a spokesman for the ministry of mines has suggested.

So Iraq has oil, Afghanistan has minerals. But the wars were about Weapons of Mass Destruction (which weren't there) and, er, making the world a safer place - or something like that. All a big coincidence, of course.

The Coincidence Of Numbers

The two clippings - above and below - are from the UK's Daily Mail newspaper.

Numbers 33 and 76Before I go any further I'll explain that the house number, where I live, is 76 and my previous address was a property with the number 33.

I'll now get to the point of this post. Researchers for the Axa insurance company have been doing a study of door numbers and have reached some statistical conclusions regarding whether certain addresses may be burgled, suffer storm and fire damage and so on. This is what the Daily Mail said, as per the cutting above right.

"So start worrying anyone living at No 33 - you are most likely to suffer from burglary, fire or flood. By contrast, stand proud those with 76 on the front door - you have the best record, say insurers Axa."

So, by coincidence, I'm one of the proud ones, now being at 76. Whereas previously I was in an insurance risk home being at 33.

All of this rings true for me. I'm not trying to tempt fate, I have my fingers crossed and I've touched wood, but my present house has been very lucky for me. So much so that I am reluctant to move. My previous home though wasn't so lucky and there were, what shall I say, a few problems and life there wasn't quite so smooth.

Carrying on with the numbers theme. I've also written a post previously saying how 76 features as a significant number generally in my life - followed by 6s and 7s - thus the url address for my other blog being www.67notout.com.

I was looking at the Stumbleupon website this morning, where one of my posts has been listed. It's the one about a Captain Perry and his NDE - Perry being my surname. This particular post has had 67 referrals from Stumbleupon.

So 67 and 76 referrals when the name Perry is mentioned - coincidence? Or is there something more meaningful about numbers and how they appear in our lives? I reckon there is.

Attracting Birds Coincidence

We seem to be attracting birds!

There's the baby bird in the photos, for instance, who flew onto my wife's hand while she was gardening - that's why she's wearing the dirty gloves. He must have needed a rest and was quite happy to remain where he was while I went indoors to fetch my camera.

Later we walked down the road where we live and there was a young girl waiting. She asked if we could help her. She'd found a fledgling bird and didn't know what to do. We sorted that out and, after a walk, returned home.

That evening we were heading, on foot again, to our son's house and at the side of the road a young black rook was ahead of us. He stopped on the pavement and, as we caught up with him, ran next to us looking up at the banked wall at the side of the road.

He ran in a sort of sideways motion, looked up, ran a bit further, looked up and so it continued. Almost something like a dog would do. My wife gently picked him up, he didn't struggle, and put him on the high bank. He looked at us as if to say thank you, turned round, and walked off into the undergrowth on the bank.

The birds were all remarkably tame despite being wild. They appeared to trust us, which was a lovely feeling.

Just thinking: I'm posting this on my late mum's birthday - perhaps that's got something to with the birds, some sort of connection. As she got older she would often sit in our living room and say she was happy to sit quietly watching the birds in our garden.

The Giant WW2 Soldier Coincidence

During the second world war the fighting that Corporal Bob Roberts, of the Canadian North Shore New Brunswick Regiment, experienced was fierce in Calais, France. Allied troops were trying to stop the Germans shelling Dover, England from five gun emplacements.

Eventually the Germans' surrendered and gradually they laid down their weapons. Mr Roberts remembers the action and also how he and his comrades captured Jacob Nacken, who was the tallest man in the German army at 7ft 6in.

Bob Roberts was given the job of frisking Nacken and this brought a lighter moment at the end of such fierce fighting - Bob is only 5ft 3" and even the captured Germans' sniggered and laughed as he frisked the 7ft 6in man.

Bob Roberts, who now lives in Bournemouth, England, is 87 years old - he married an English girl - and often wondered whatever happened to the giant soldier. He never even new his name.

Moving forward 65 years and amateur historian, Rob Smith, sets out to try and trace his mother's Canadian wartime sweetheart. In doing so he comes across the bizarre photo of the diminutive soldier frisking an extremely tall German in some obscure archive.

By coincidence the man he was trying to trace was in the same Canadian regiment as Corporal Bob Roberts. He then found out, by a further coincidence, that Bob lived just a mile away from his mother in England.

Bob was contacted and sent a copy of the photo. The mystery of the 7ft 6in soldier he met in the war was solved. He said, "I couldn't believe it when I received the photo after all these years. It took me back to a moment of light heartedness so soon after I had been a blink of an eye from death."

He added, "I never knew his name, only that he was a lance corporal. He spoke very good English ... it's quite incredible that after all these years I have found out who this guy was."

As for Jakob Nacken he died at 80. After the war he went to New York and was signed up as the World's Biggest Father Christmas. He moved on to work in the circus business as The Giant Uranus. Portuguese Tech Support Worker Coincidence

A strange coincidence story which whimsically asks if there is a Secret Portuguese Organisation who try to scam girls out of $250. Story from 67 Not Out reader Belinda.

clip art Portuguese man"A while back I had a boyfriend who was Portuguese and was employed as a Tech Support Worker. He still lived at home with his mom, together with his eight year old sister. He owned a peculiar necklace, which he said was the only one of its kind. It was a piece of round glass with a translucent picture of an eye.

On my birthday he generously - or so I thought - bought me a laptop. Problem was, a little later, he asked if I would give him $250 as he was unable to keep up the payments on the computer.

We soon parted company following this.

Moving forward three years I met a great guy at a party. On our first date I found out he was a Portuguese Tech Support Worker who lived with his mom and eight year old sister! But that's not all.

A couple of weeks after this he took me to his dad's autoshop and hanging on the wall was the exact same necklace that my previous boyfriend owned. He then had the audacity to ask if I would give him $250 because he was broke.

What I'm wondering is: Was all this a coincidence or is there some sort of secret organisation of Portuguese Tech Support Workers who scam girls in to giving them $250!"

Unlucky Lottery Coincidence Story

UK National LotteryIn life things happen for a reason, even if we don't fully understand what these actually are. A coincidence may bring about something very special but the opposite is also true. Sometimes life may appear to give us a bit of a knock. Take the story of senior citizen Robert Guest for instance.

Mr Guest played the twice weekly UK National Lottery without fail every week, and had been doing so for the best part of ten years. Each entry had exactly the same numbers, I guess he looked on these as his lucky numbers.

When the mid week lottery draw took place on television he could hardly believe his eyes - there they were - his numbers. He had hit the big time and could see himself on holidays, in plush cars and restaurants. Then later a thought hit him like a bolt of lightning ... he didn't have a ticket for this draw!

Mr.Guest explained, "When they (the numbers) came up, I saw I had three, I had four, I had five, I had the bonus ball. I went through my pockets and through my drawers searching for the tickets. I hoped I hadn't lost them. It took me about an hour, then I remembered that I hadn't put them on."

Yes, the senior citizen had missed out on winning over £125,000 (about $200,000) and was heartbroken. He said, "It's an awful experience. It's just got me down and I'm all on edge." The 67 year old from Spital Tongues, Newcastle says he has lost over 9lbs in weight through stress and worrying about what has happened.

So why did he forget to buy his regular lottery tickets? Because he had to go to the doctors, that's why.

He was running late and everything seemed to be against him. There was a long queue at the newsagents, where he always bought his ticket, so he rushed to another shop, but that also had a queue. Worried about being late for his appointment he told himself that he would buy the ticket after he had seen the doctor - but he didn't.

The retired pipe fitter said, "I was in a hurry to get to the doctors and afterwards my mind just went completely blank."

But he still has his dreams. Mr Guest has vowed to continue with his regular lottery numbers until he hits the Big One.

It does make me wonder though: was there a reason why he missed out on buying his regular lottery ticket? It's strange how, at times, we are just like flotsam riding the waves of coincidence and circumstance.

THE COINCIDENCE OF THE STOPPED CLOCKS


One day in February 1966, in his Cambridge, England, apartment, the Rt Rev James A. Pike found his clocks stopped at 8:19 — the hour corresponding to the time when his son, James Jr, had shot himself to death in New York City two weeks earlier.

The strange coincidence, according to Pike, was accompanied by other unexplained phenomena: his books were mysteriously moved from place to place; clusters of safety pins appeared "where they had not been before, all open to the position that the hands of a clock are in at 8:19."

The Rev. Pike concluded,
"I feel that it is James who communicates with me."

As Nirvana's lead singer, Kurt Cobain, recovered last week from a drug-induced coma, fans took grim note of a song the band contributed to the Beavis and Butt-head Experience album. The title: I Hate Myself and Want to Die. COINCIDENCE OF THE WEEK


The coincidence is that there were two similar stories in the same week.

The first:
A rookie State patrolman, feeling his authority, stopped a tourist car which was several inches out of the right highway lane.

"Where are you from?" he demanded.

"Cincinnati," replied the tourist.

The new officer smiled triumphantly. "Well, buddy, suppose you explain why you've got Ohio tags on your car."

And the second story:
A traffic policeman in the town of North Woodstock, New Hampshire, stopped a car for speeding. The driver was a woman. "Where you from?" the cop demanded. "Philadelphia," replied the lady. The cop put on a wise look and nodded his head. "Oh, so you're from Philadelphia, eh?" he said, sarcastically. "Well, if you're from Philadelphia, whatcha doin' with them Pennsylvania licence plates?"

The Puzzling Anniversary Text Coincidence

Happy Anniversary clip artIt was the wedding anniversary of John Davis' parents, who live in Wales, and he realised he had forgotten to send them a card or any flowers.

As John didn't want to be too much in their bad books he sent them a text until he had time to phone them properly later in the day.

Later that afternoon he received a phone call from his next door neighbour, whom he didn't really know that well - and who thanked him for sending a message of congratulations for his anniversary.

To say this puzzled John is putting it mildly.

Firstly he didn't have his neighbour's number in his mobile's memory, secondly he didn't know it was his neighbour's anniversary and thirdly the text message had got through okay to his parents.

He has no idea as to how the same text message was somehow sent to his neighbour. And it was, of course, a coincidence that his parents and his neighbour had the same anniversary date.

Hard To Believe Coincidence Story From The AA

AA vanOn UK television a while back there was a coincidence story about a guy who works for the AA - that's the Automobile Association as opposed to Alcoholics Anonymous.

He was out for a walk in the middle of nowhere when a public phone box he was passing started to ring. He thought he might as well answer the phone and when he did so was shocked to find that the caller was his dispatcher from the AA.

It seems she had meant to call his mobile phone number but absent mindedly had rung his staff number instead - which just happened to be the number of the phone box he was walking past.

Strange but true!

Small Coincidences Make Up A Day

The following is taken from my 67 Not Out blog and shows how coincidences and synchros often make up our day:

Nothing too dramatic for this post, just a few 'small' coincidences I've noticed so far today.

Firstly, I went to the Reuters website to do a little research for something I'm doing and the first article I read had been edited by 'Michael Perry', which is my name (see below) - though I'm often called Mike or Mick or even Mickey.

Afterwards I went to the Stumbleupon website where one of my posts had been listed. I have written previously on Coincidence Of Lucky Numbers that a significant number in my life is 76.

The post I was looking for on Stumbleupon was one I had written about my dead father and a voice I had heard. The number of people who had read the post from Stumbleupon was 76, and this sent a shiver up my spine - a message perhaps?

First thing this morning I weighed myself and for the first time for a while my weight was 11 stones 11 pounds - so the scales showed 11:11.

Later in the morning I mowed the lawn in my back garden and after finishing and going indoors the time on my clock was 11:11.

Much has been written about the significance of 11:11 including on the synchrosecrets blog.

At lunch time I read my newspaper and there was an article about coincidences. They gave an example: "On the seventh day of the seventh month (July) of 1977, a woman named Mrs Severn became 77!"

After lunch my wife mentioned that she hadn't heard from one of her old dressmaking clients, Bunty, for years and wondered where she was now living. Yes, you've guessed. A short while later, the phone rang and it was Bunty.

Wonder what'll happen next?

How To Find Lucky Serendipity And Coincidences

Serendipity and good luckI was reading an article in the Daily Mail about good luck and serendipity. This got me thinking as to how similar coincidences and synchronicity are to serendipity.

My dictionary quotes serendipity as: The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident. Which, in a way, is similar to coincidences - though they may not always be fortunate happenings.

My blogging friend Terri Patrick described serendipity as "the lighter, fun side of coincidence while synchronicity is the scientific tool."

The article I mentioned told of a way to 'Prime yourself for chance.' But really you could almost substitute the word chance for coincidences or even synchronicity. Anyway, see what you think:

"Serendipity smiles upon people who have a more relaxed approach to life. They have clarified their long-term goals, but don't worry too much about the details.

Once they've pinpointed the ultimate goal, they believe there are many ways to get there. This requires openness to life's surprising twists and turns as well as cognitive and behavioural flexibility.
An open person heads to the dog park thinking he might encounter a new friend, business partner or romantic interest. A closed person sees only dog owners.

You can increase your opportunities for luck by having a large network of friends and by being flexible. Take varied routes to work or go to different places for coffee rather than 'the usual'.

Exploring new territory naturally increases good fortune. And try to keep your mood positive. Anxiety gives us tunnel vision; while we are focusing on a potential danger we miss extraneous, but potentially beneficial, information."

Now isn't that virtually a recipe for also experiencing more meaningful coincidences?

Pregnant Tummies Touch In A Flickr Moment

This is how he describes the coincidence that brought about this photo.

"I showed up to work today and saw that two of my co-workers, who are both equally far along in their pregnancies, just happened to be wearing the same kind of stretchy shirt, one in blue and the other in pink. They were facing each other talking, and as soon as I saw those identically round bellies, I thought of the dots in Flickr's logo! I explained this and asked them if I could take a photo with my camera-phone. They agreed. They even put their bellies together for me."

The flickr dots he mentions are what often shows up on flickr while waiting for a photo or photos set to load on their website (pic on right).

Winning Lottery Numbers Same Twice In A Row

In 1986, Evelyn Marie Adams won the New Jersey lottery for the second time in four months, an outcome called a '1 in 17 trillion' long shot in a New York Times. They were probably a bit out on those stats!In September of 2009 it was the regular lottery draw in Bulgaria. The winning numbers were drawn live on television: 4, 15, 23, 24, 35 and 42.

Everyone was stunned by the result.

Why? Because these were the exact same numbers as per the previous draw! What a coincidence.

"Was it a conspiracy or some form of cheating?" everyone wanted to know. Especially when they heard that there were 18 winners, - yet no one had picked the correct numbers the previous time the numbers had come up.

Everything was checked and double checked and an official declared that, 'manipulation was impossible.'

All sorts of mathematical odds were produced. One mathematician in Bulgaria, Michail Konstantinov, said that the same numbers being selected twice in a row was one in four million. Not sure how he arrived at this as we are told in the UK that to pick out six numbers from 49, in one draw, is odds of 13,983,816 to one. Perhaps Michail's decimal point was in the wrong place or something.

Whatever the odds, it was an unusual happening to say the least. The Bulgarian mathematician did go on to say that, 'coincidences do happen.'

A spokesperson for the Bulgarian lottery said, "This is happening for the first time in the 52 year history of the lottery. We are absolutely stunned to see such a freak coincidence but it did happen."

The problem with statistics, when considering if they are a meaningful coincidence, is that 72.4% of stats are made up!

For UK lottery players: Up to date stats (at 13-03-12) show that the numbers which are drawn most are: 38, 44, 43, 23, 11 and 40. But whichever numbers you pick, it's still odds of nearly 14 million to one to win the jackpot.

He Gets Great Aunt's Titanic Boarding Card By Coincidence

I've written about coincidences involving the ill fated Titanic previously on my 67 Not Out blog but here's something else that ties in with that story.

Last year there was a special Titanic exhibition held at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Cornwall. John and Elizabeth Curnow from Plymouth decided to take a look.

Visitors to the exhibition were all given replica Titanic boarding cards with the name of a passenger on them. The idea was that they could then check to see whether the passenger had survived the iceberg.

Obviously lots of these boarding passes were handed out, completely at random. When John and Elizabeth got round to looking at the one they had been given they were amazed to see that the name on the card was that of John's great aunt.

John's great Aunt, Addie Wells of Penzance, was on board the Titanic along with her children John and Ralph. She was on her way to be reunited with her husband, Arthur, who had emigrated to Akron, Ohio.

The family were originally booked to travel on the Oceanic but were transferred to the Titanic because of coal strikes which were taking place at the time.

Addie and her children, were a few of the lucky ones. They survived by scrambling aboard a lifeboat and were then transferred to the Carpathia and taken to safety.

John said of the boarding pass, "Surely there's more chance of winning the lottery. It had to be fate... never in a million years could we have expected to receive our great aunt's boarding pass."

Stoners Close Created By A Coincidence

Here's one for you.

I was brought up in the north east (of England), where I met a boy from London who's parents moved from Battersea. We became friends at junior school and then secondary school. I was then sent to boarding school and my family moved to London. My friend and I lost touch.

I was traveling home from work on the bus one dark winter evening when this bloke came bounding up the bus and said, "Jase, it's me, Micky!".

We've been best mates ever since and we have a band and both sing, write songs and play guitar.

Regards."

It's interesting how Jason and his friend were reunited as together they make up the Stoners Close band.

Sally Whittaker Cancer Coincidence

Sally Whittaker / WebsterSometimes it's not so nice when real life imitates what we see on our television screens - but this was the case for actress Sally Whittaker.

Sally is well known in the UK for her role as Sally Webster in the popular peak time soap Coronation Street. She was pleased - if that is the right word - when she found out that she had a strong and important storyline coming up. Her character was to have breast cancer.

Sally had played out her first scenes for Coronation Street, where her character learned that she was suffering from the disease. In real life her own consultant then told her that she too had breast cancer.

She fainted in shock and afterwards asked the consultant to repeat the diagnosis. She thought that maybe he was getting her character in the soap muddled up with her.

Her life was imitating art and, at first, she, "... found the coincidence almost too much too bear."

Sally is sure that if she hadn't have been researching breast cancer, for her role, she would have ignored her own sign that something may be wrong. She recalls, "It was so close to my chest bone I thought, no, it’s absolutely nothing. The idea it might be cancer left my head as soon as it entered it."

After seeing her Coronation Street scripts, however, she remembered her her own 'lump'. She said, "I reached for this little thing by my chest bone. It didn’t feel like I had imagined a lump to feel. It felt like a flat disc about one centimetre long and was not on the fleshy part of the breast."

Coincidentally when she eventually went to see a hospital consultant it happened to be the same one who was advising the Coronation Street's scriptwriting team about Sally's on screen illness.

The real life Sally had to have a lumpectomy and chemotherapy and she shaved her head prior to the treatment.

The good news is that Sally Whittaker is now back to health as the Sally of Coronation Street.  Interesting that both the actress and role she is playing have the same first name.

In an interview with GMTV she confirmed, "I'm doing really well - I'm really, really well. I've got through it all."

Sally also offered some advice: "Any woman, who's got anything that you are slightly worried about, go and get it checked out - because I never thought this would happen to me."

World War 2 Egg Custard Coincidence

This is a story from the BBC's WW2 Wartime Memories Archives and was submitted by Genevieve. It tells of how an egg custard saved a life.

ARP badgeLet me set the scene. It is 1941, at the start of the Blitz, the 10th of January. The place is Southsea in Portsmouth near the railway lines at Fratton. Our family consisted of my dad George, my mum Rene, my elder sister Muriel, and I am Roy who had his 5th birthday a few months earlier. Dad worked as a printer and travelled daily to Gosport, and in the evening served as a member of the ARP (Air Raid Precautions), that much maligned band of people who are so badly served by the TV image.

On this particular evening during which the air raid warning had sounded, we had finished our tea and Dad was talking about going on duty, but Mum said that Dad was to have his egg custard before he left as she had made it especially for him. At that time fresh eggs were in short supply in the City. Dad dutifully ate his pudding and, while he was eating, two loud explosions suddenly shook the house and it was remarked that 'they were close'. Having finished his pudding, off he went.

From conversations afterwards it appeared that one of the explosions was a bomb that destroyed the ARP Post that Dad would have been in. At least one Warden was killed and one buried for a long time. Dad would not talk about this incident or any other subsequent events. But thanks to the egg custard, his life had been saved.

We remained in Southsea for the duration and suffered damage to our house, but that is another story. The story of the incident of the Egg Custard remained buried as a memory only to be revived by the history projects programme.

The Middle Of The Bible Coincidence

Bible Psalm 118:8Here's one of those strange coincidences I hadn't heard before. It's about the Bible and supposedly shows that God is at the centre of the Bible. The facts can easily be checked. Well maybe not easily but they can be confirmed if so inclined.

To start off with:

The shortest chapter of the Bible is Psalms 117 and the longest chapter is Psalms 119.

Now by 'coincidence' Psalms 118 is the middle chapter of the Bible - between the shortest and the longest.

That's all pretty straight foward.

This means that there are 594 chapters (if you have time to count them) before Psalms 118 and, of course, as it's in the middle, there are 594 chapters after Psalms 118.

Okay, if you add 594 and 594 hopefully you'll get a total of 1188.

This is where it gets interesting because Psalms 118:8 just happens to be the middle verse of the Bible - another coincidence? And this is what the verse reads:

"It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man."

In other words God is at the centre of the Bible.

Q.E.D. or quod erat demonstrandum.

Obviously it's up to individuals as to what they actually make of this.

Squashed Coca-Cola Can Brought Them Together

As per yesterday's post this coincidence story was from a reader of my other blog 67 Not Out - all coincidence stories are welcome, whether short, long or even medium!

I was wandering around an open air market in Wimborne with my daughter-in-law. I said to her, "I would give anything if I could see Alice’s face just one more time." This was an old neighbour who I hadn’t seen for over seven years.

Virtually seconds or maybe minutes later I walked over to a litter bin to get rid of a Coca-Cola can I had been carrying. I looked up and there was Alice putting something into the other side of the litter bin. I couldn’t believe it and neither could she. She said she had been thinking about me recently, how weird is that,

Friends Meet By Coincidence On Eastbourne Pier

A simple coincidence from a reader of my other blog 67 Not Out. Your coincidence stories are welcome if you would like them published on this blog.

The photo above is of Eastbourne Pier, which I snapped (by coincidence?) when I was in the area in 2009.

Last week while visiting my brother in Brighton, where I used to live, I casually asked, "I wonder if my mate James still lives here?"

I hadn’t seen James for over 18 years.

The next day I went for a drive to Eastbourne with my brother. This is a few miles along the coast from Brighton. We walked along the pier and there was James sitting on a seat enjoying the sea view!

The Woman Who Had The Affair Coincidence

Today's story is, with thanks, from Audrey T. A broken relationship leads to a strange coincidence.

clipart of man and womanMy long term partner and I parted, it seems he wanted other things from life - including other women!

I was very down but an old friend Julie, who I rarely see as she has moved to Paris, said she would be visiting me the coming weekend. This gave me a lift and I looked forward to seeing her.

I met up with her at London Heathrow airport and she said she was bursting to tell me something.

She told me what had happened. On the plane from Paris she was seated next to another woman and they struck up a conversation. It turned out that she was from Uxbridge, which is where I also live, and Julie asked her almost jokingly if she therefore knew me.

The woman stuttered in an embarrassed way and then stopped talking.

Arriving in Heathrow the woman suddenly turned to Julie and said something not very nice about me, which I won't repeat here. Julie ended the conversation but noticed that the woman was called Anne Burbridge* from her luggage label.

And Anne Burbridge is the name of one of the women who had been having an affair with my ex-partner.

The 'coincidence' quite shocked us. What are the odds that Julie, who I see only perhaps once or twice a year, would be seated next to the woman who was - to put it politely - romantically involved with my ex.

Sometimes I think that coincidences happen for a reason but I'm not exactly sure of the reason for this particular chance meeting.

A Coincidence Or A Prayer Answered

A coincidence story today from Josue about a 'coincidence' that happened in his life - or maybe it was a prayer answered.

As a child I was taught Catholic and Jewish beliefs. I'd have to say that growing up within these religions left me a bit confused. It wasn't long before I decided that religion was just bull.

However, despite my beliefs at this point, my story takes me on a journey of faith - which I promised myself I would share if I had the opportunity.

When I was five years old my father left my mother and I.

I didn't realise or know, until many years later, as to why he left us. It was because he was sick and suffered from schizophrenia. To cut a long story short, he left as he considered this would be what was best for us. Unfortunately though, until I discovered this fact, during all my years while growing up I hated him.

Fourteen years later, after understanding why he left me, I prayed and asked God to forgive me for having hated my dad for all of those years.

The very next day, out of the blue, I had a phone call from my dad! He called, after all of those years, just to say hello.

When I think now about this coincidence, I fall back on the thought that God must have heard my prayer."

Perhaps you may have seen this before but it's new to me, it's about the death of Michael Jackson.

As per the funeral ticket on the right, Michael's Memorial Service was held on July 7th 2009. We can then see below that his will was also dated the 7th of July - but this time 2002.

She Was Topless In Front Of Her Postman

The UK press quoted a survey about how British women will wear bikinis or go topless abroad but not while holidaying at home.

You may well wonder where I'm going with this post but there is an amusing coincidence story about this from Sally Joseph. She writes:

woman sunbathing clip art'Reading about how British women are more likely to cover up while at home brought back to me an embarrassing coincidence while I was on holiday in the south of Spain.

I was sunbathing on the beach while topless and decided to go for a swim in the sea to cool off. I didn't bother to put my bikini top back on.

Suddenly I heard a voice saying, "Hello Mrs Joseph."

I looked round and to my embarrassment it was my postman - and he wasn't looking at my face!

I wore my bikini top for the rest of the holiday. Fancy meeting the guy who delivers your mail, while on holiday thousands of miles away from home. At least it made my husband laugh.'

Coincidence Near Misses

hour glass: coincidence near missesThis blog has quite a few coincidence or synchronicity stories, some being more impressive than others - but none about the 'near misses.'

By this I mean situations where a coincidence could/should have happened but somehow didn't quite materialise.

When my wife was last in Germany, where she was born, she met up with a cousin.

At the cousin's house was another cousin - who my wife hadn't seen for about twenty years. She was also visiting - a coincidence perhaps?

On talking to this other cousin they got chatting about travel and holidays and she mentioned how she had been to the Canary Islands recently. My wife told her that we had also been to the Canary Islands.

They then compared notes. It seems we - my wife and I - were in the islands at exactly the same time as this cousin, but there was more to it than this.

We were actually in hotels next door to each other, at the same time, and visited many similar places probably on the same days. The cousin even had a drink or two in our hotel bar.

Somehow though we never all met up. So this was a near miss coincidence.

I got to thinking about this and realised we'd had a few other small near miss coincidences recently. I've been trying to think what this means. Perhaps we've been slightly out of sync or maybe the coincidences didn't happen for some other reason.

Coincidence near misses, of course, may be happening to all of us and we simply aren't aware of them. If only we had been a couple of minutes later or taken a different route and so on, then who knows what we may have experienced.

Perhaps it's a lesson to bring our intuition into play a little more. To ask ourselves what time we should go somewhere or what route to take.

Who knows what we could be missing out on and what a difference this could make to us. Coincidences or synchronicity can sometimes change lives.

The Death Of A Loved One Can Bring Coincidences

Clement FreudToday's story is about the death of Clement Freud, the grandson of Sigmund, who was well known in the UK as a Member of Parliament, a Knight, chef, broadcaster, author, soldier and raconteur.

Clement Freud died last year at the age of 84 while he was in the mid sentence of writing an article for The Racing Post. He had a massive heart attack and the last words he wrote were 'and in God's good time'.

His wife has stated that, in his 50+ years of writing, she had never known her husband make any reference previously to God.

At the time of his death his daughter, Emma Freud, was in Copenhagen and she received two calls from her mother trying to tell her about her father's passing. As her phone was switched off she phoned her mother back and heard the news.

Emma says, "I made a noise - a bit like a lion and a bit like a gasp. I instantly felt sorry that my mum had to listen to it."

Now comes the second strange incident. Emma's 13 year old daughter, who was two flights below her in a restaurant, 'heard' her gasp. In Emma's words:

"My daughter incomprehensibly heard it and instantly ran up to me as fast as she could. No one else heard a thing, but something communicated itself down to the basement and she responded in a heartbeat."

In time the funeral and cremation were arranged and Emma decided to sing a song, to her own piano accompaniment, at the ceremony. She chose the classic I'll Be Seeing You In All The Old Familiar Places.

Following the cremation, when all of the mourners had left, Emma and her partner decided to walk down to their local ice cream parlour. As they opened the door the speakers were playing Billie Holiday singing I'll Be Seeing You In All The Old Familiar Places!

As Emma put it, "Obviously my dad hadn't gone to heaven, he'd gone to Gelato Mio instead. And while he was there he wanted to hear the song sung properly."

It does seem that such coincidences and happenings can be in abundance following the death of loved ones.

Coincidences United Two People In Need

An interesting set of coincidences in this story today showing how people often meet for a purpose. In this instance a couple, who needed each other, met on the Internet and then discovered the connections between them.

Interlocking coloured stars clipartMy name is Kim and I was raised in a small town in western Nebraska called Alliance. I am also recovering alcoholic. One day I was in an Alcoholics Anonymous chat room,(which I rarely visit), when a man named Scott started talking to me. As it turns out he once lived in Omaha, where I live now and went to school here to become a Nurse.

As we talked further, he told me that he wasn’t from Omaha, but was raised in western Nebraska. You got it, he was from my home town. After I learned his last name, it sounded familiar, but we were 7 years apart in age. We did however have some mutual friends in Alliance.

Then we got back on the subject of Omaha. He told me that he used to live in central Omaha on a street called Poppleton. I told him that I had just bought a home in North Omaha off of 45th Street. He said, "Really, my Aunt used to live on that street." Scott then asked for the address, when I told him he said that he was certain that this was the home that his Aunt lived in. He described my house to me, just like someone would have if they were standing next to me. I have confirmed that this was his Aunt’s home from neighbors that have lived on this street for over 20 years.

Scott and I continued our friendship, sometimes communicating through e-mail, but mostly over the phone for the past 8 months. We have become close and are very much in love. Scott and I believe that God brought us together through these series of coincidences.
